The mercurial Argentine has been a one-club man all his senior career but, at least for the time being, he’s no longer tied to the Catalan giants.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists “everything is on track” regarding Lionel Messi’s contract extension.

Question marks linger over the future of Messi, who is currently on international duty preparing for Argentina’s Copa America quarter-final against Ecuador.

It’s hard to imagine him in a club shirt other than that of Barcelona, but it certainly is within the realms of possibility with how things are at present.

The record six-time Ballon d’Or winner, who was previously linked with moves to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, allowed his contract to run down and is currently a free agent.

However, despite the player having pushed for an exit from Camp Nou last year, optimism exists among the Barca hierarchy over keeping the 33-year-old at the club.

“We want Messi to stay and Leo wants to stay, everything is on track,” Laporta told El Transistor.

“We have the issue of fair play, we are in the process of finding the best solution for both parties.”

“I would like to announce that he is staying but at the moment I cannot say it because we are in the process of looking for the best solution for both parties.”
