Anthony Martial received a red card in his side’s defeat to Tottenham. Looking at the bigger picture, what could this mean for Edinson Cavani?
Anthony Martial perhaps picked the worst possible time to be hit with a red card. It added more pain to the already humiliating 6-1 scoreline in the evening.
By now, we all know that Edinson Cavani is on his way to Manchester United. Many reports have labeled the veteran forward as a ‘backup’ attacking option for United.
The latest turn of events for Martial could see things take an unexpected twist.
Just maybe the Frenchman was overthinking the arrival of another striker at the club. In a rash moment, the striker hit out at Erik Lamela and was given his marching orders. Although, some United fans feel the 24-year-old was simply provoked by the Spurs man.
Martial will serve a three-game ban for his conduct and that could leave Ole Solskjaer with a big decision to make.
Odion Ighalo is available but with the arrival of Cavani imminent, it’s likely the Uruguayan will be given the nod.
If Cavani hits the ground running from the onset, it could be bad news fro Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman is yet to score a goal this season and his stats don’t leave for pleasant reading either.
Martial will have memories of 2016 when a 34-year-old Ibrahimovic arrived at the club and displaced him from the club. The Frenchman even lost his no.9 jersey at the club and his agent publicly mentioned how he wasn’t happy about it at the time.
The same could yet happen again given how the latest run of events appear to be shaping out.
All directions now point to Cavani getting an immediate chance to prove himself at Manchester United. Martial would be blaming himself for something totally unavoidable.
