The Portuguese midfielder has continued his key role in United’s lineup since Erik ten Hag’s arrival.

Erik ten Hag has defended Bruno Fernandes, who has come under criticism after Manchester United’s 7-0 defeat against Liverpool.

Harry Maguire has stayed as Man Utd’s first captain. However, the England star’s limited playing time has seen Fernandes embrace his new role in Erik ten Hag’s lineup this season.

The Portugal international was one of the squad members whose performances against Liverpool has attracted criticism. But Ten Hag has fully backed his No.2 captain.

“I’m happy to have Bruno Fernandes as captain,” Ten Hag said (via Fabrizio Romano). “Definitely [still captain], I think he’s playing a brilliant season, he’s played an important role in the position that we are.

“He’s giving energy to the team, running with intensity, in the right way.

Fernandes has linked up with Marcus Rashford, who is enjoying the form of his life in United’s attacking line this season.

The England international echoed Ten Hag’s comments about his teammate.

“I love playing with Bruno, as you can imagine,” Rashford said.

“I’m 100% behind him. Bruno helped other players become better leaders.

“Ten Hag? Having a new manager was exciting for me and I’ve not looked back since then.”
