Van Gaal has claimed the Qatar World Cup was rigged to help Lionel Messi lead Argentina to the title.
Wout Weghorst has reacted to Louis van Gaal’s recent comments about the 2022 World Cup.
The veteran manager, who was in charge of the Netherlands during the tournament, has implied that there was a conspiracy to help Lionel Messi realize his dream of lifting the World Cup.
Virgil van Dijk and Ronald Koeman have already distanced themselves from Van Gaal’s controversial comments. However, the former Manchester United star might have a different opinion about what happened during the tournament.
When asked how he felt after hearing his former manager’s remarks, Weghorst said: “I thought, what a fantastic, honest, lovely man.”
The reporter then asked him whether he thinks Van Gaal has a point, to which he replied: “No, you asked me what I thought. Whether he has a point … I have my own opinion.”
Weghorst scored twice in the Netherlands’ defeat against Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals. The game was arguably Argentina’s most difficult challenge in their quest to reach the final. Van Gaal’s beef with Messi, which had started before the game, culminated in the Argentine’s celebration against the Dutchman in the 73rd minute.
