De Gea and Lingard the stars of the show while Ronaldo continues his red-hot goalscoring streak as Red Devils move level with leaders Liverpool.
In a game that contained elements of drama and suspense in the final few minutes, Manchester United ended up on the right side of the 2-1 scoreline against West Ham United.
The match began after a minute’s round of applause from both sets of players, coaches, and fans as a tribute to the late Jimmy Greaves, the former West Ham and England striker who died on Sunday.
Both sides came close to breaking the deadlock in the first 30 minutes but it was the Hammers who delivered the first blow. Said Benrahma struck from outside of the box, his shot took a huge deflection off Raphael Varane and found its way into the back of the net.
It took just five minutes for the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men to respond, and it was none other than their homecoming hero Cristiano Ronaldo who got his side back in the game. The Portuguese phenomenon reacted quickly to poke home a loose ball from six yards after Lukas Fabianski had spilled Bruno Fernandes’ in-swinging cross.
Ronaldo almost bagged a brace early in the second half as he drove an effort goalwards after being teed up by his compatriot Fernandes in the box, but he was denied by the goalkeeper.
The two sides looked on course for settling for a draw, but Jesse Lingard, who cost his side the game in their Champions League opener, proved to be a super-sub as his stunning strike saw the visitors take the lead with a minute remaining.
Deep into stoppage-time, the hosts were handed a golden opportunity to salvage a point when Luke Shaw gave away a penalty. David De Gea, however, came to United’s rescue as he dived to his left and blocked the attempt by Mark Noble, who was subbed on for the sole purpose of taking the spot-kick.
