Werner has revealed a key factor that contributed to his initial struggles at Chelsea.

Timo Werner has admitted Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel’s tendency to hand him his instructions in German has made life easier.

The former RB Leipzig striker struggled to live up to expectations under Frank Lampard during the first half of the season.

A change in manager, however, has led to an improvement.

Tuchel replaced Lampard in January and has made an immediate impact. Chelsea are back in the Premier League top-four, reached the FA Cup final, and are in the Champions League semi-finals.

And while Werner hasn’t quite hit the same goal numbers he managed in Germany, he has improved and assisted Hakim Ziyech’s match-winning goal in the 1-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City recently.

“Of course, you speak another language,” Werner told Chelsea’s Mike’d Up podcast.

“For you guys (the hosts), when you come from America to London or England is much easier because it’s the same language.

“German is completely different to English. We learned it in school, but it’s always hard to understand.

“For example, when we had Lampard as the manager before, everything was in English, but now (under Tuchel) it’s more in German as well, so it’s easier for me.

“To understand everything at the beginning was not easy.”
