Timo Werner spoke on his move to Chelsea and admits he knew it was time to try something new in his career.
Timo Werner established himself as one of the most prolific marksmen in Europe last season.
His 34 goals in all competitions for RB Leipzig was a personal best that saw his stock rise even higher.
Even better, Werner marked his exit from Leipzig with 95 goals. That tally saw him become the club’s all-time record scorer.
It was only a matter of time before Liverpool and Chelsea came calling for the German forward. In the end, he chose to join the West London side.
Speaking on his exit from Leipzig, Werner says he knew the time was right for him to try something ‘different’.
“In Leipzig I was the best Timo I can be,” he said to the Independent.
“This was a really good experience. I learned a lot from the manager about the playing style. He gave me a lot to improve myself in different positions. For me, it was the right time to say ‘I want to try something new outside of Germany. I want to go to the Premier League’.”
After his debut for Chelsea against Brighton, Werner spoke on the physicality in the Premier League. He did contribute to a penalty but had a hard time in general at the Seagulls’ defense.
He echoed on his earlier comments from after that game.
“I think English football is very fast, faster than German football. And there are a lot of different styles. In the end, [whether I get more chances to score] will be down to [Chelsea] and how we play football.
“We want to play like a French team. We want to keep the ball and have different styles of football in our game, have a lot of possession and take different positions.”
Chelsea take on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Werner himself knows how important that clash is. There could be no better time for him to open his Premier League account.
