After Bartomeu’s public announcement during his resignation, Arsene Wenger gave his two cents on the European Super League.

Arsene Wenger must’ve been pissed when he saw Josep Maria Bartomeu publicly announce Barcelona’s involvement in the European Super League. This happened during his official resignation statement and it had a massive negative effect on the biggest clubs in the continent. You see, none of them had publicly accepted this new endeavor because they were trying to do it in private.

There are too many interests in play that can spoil the whole negotiation and they were doing everything without permission from UEFA. Bartomeu spoke about it because he had nothing more to lose, he left them with a huge PR problem they will have to solve over the next few months. Arsene Wenger has been one of the biggest names who were supporting this European Super League idea.

But Bartomeu’s announcement pushed him to reject it because it’s too soon to acknowledge it as an actual project. In fact, the former French manager might’ve completely changed his stance on the league in 2020.

Covid-19 might’ve killed the European Super League.

During an interview with The Guardian, Arsene Wenger spoke about this idea of the European Super League. He basically said that the Premier League as we know it would die if this new project comes to fruition. Contrary to previous years when he supported the notion, the global pandemic changed everything this year.

Wenger said: “I don’t believe that Europe is ready for that. At this period, the Premier League has a superiority. The project wanted to enforce this superiority. Other leagues tried to destroy the advantage the Premier League has. For them, the best way to do that, is to create the European League.

“So, that means to destroy the Premier League basically. If they get the agreement from the English big clubs, it will happen. This is about football as well but we are in the period where owners are investors. Their (investors) first target is to make more money and that European Super League is one way to make more money.”
