After a historic defeat, Arsene Wenger wanted to single out FC Barcelona’s biggest problems ahead of a new era at the Catalan club.
If you didn’t think it was a reality, FC Barcelona finally showed the world they are totally finished last night. Arsene Wenger made sure to point out the many mistakes they currently have ahead of a new era that is taking place at the club. As it turns out, FC Barcelona doesn’t only have economic issues. Even though that’s where most of their problems originate from, they also have some deep institutional problems that haven’t been addressed.
From their management of the club to how they treat their stars. FC Barcelona simply can’t make magic happened as they were capable before. This is a matter of making the right decisions in the face of a complete renovation from the ground up. Arsene Wenger did this many times at Arsenal but he was never able to get a similar result after his golden generation was too old to keep playing. This is not just about trying to keep or sell Leo Messi. It is also about trying to put together the most competitive squad possible that can actually win something in the future.
Wenger’s advice to FC Barcelona.
“I’ll congratulate Paris Saint-Germain tonight and especially Mbappe. He has shown intelligence, skill and confidence,” Wenger told BeIn Sports. “I would say for Barcelona it hurts. We have all seen great Barca teams. But in our job if you are two years wrong by buying players, you have a big problem in a big club. Barcelona is wrong for more than two years. That shows they have a big task to rebuild the team and not be short-term. For PSG, they’ve been in the final last year. Now they can come back, they’ve shown maturity, class and organization. They will be one of the favorites now to win the competition.
“I think Barcelona when you read the papers, they are €1.1billion down,” added Wenger. “So they have two handicaps, they have to rebuild the team and they have no money. I don’t know how they can do it. The young players they have at the moment in the team are not strong enough to come back to a top, top level. To me, it looks like this is a job of three or four years for Barcelona to come back. To first come back to a good financial situation and then they have a choice to make: do they extend Messi or not? If we extend Messi today at Barcelona that means we have no money at all for anybody else.”
