After serious consideration, FC Barcelona finally decided who’s getting Lionel Messi’s number ‘10’. It’s a huge responsibility but much needed.
When Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona earlier this summer, there was major concern over who would take his mythical number ‘10’ jersey. He took over the number when Ronaldinho left the club with a major responsibility of the huge shoes he needed to fill. Needless to say, Leo far exceeded any expectations by becoming the club’s most important player ever. Now that he is leaving, this responsibility will fall on someone else. Initially, there was a major outcry because the fans demanded the number to remain unoccupied.
There was concern that the player who took over this number would feel enormous pressure and failed to live up to the expectations. However, La Liga’s rules demanded someone to take over the number on the day after the transfer window deadline. FC Barcelona finally made the announcement of the player who will take the club’s number ‘10’. This decision will likely create a division but in hindsight, this choice was probably the best for all parties involved.
Ansu Fati is the chosen one.
When the supporters offered their opinion about who should get the number ‘10’ at Barça, they all agreed on one thing: it needed to go to an academy player. Messi was one of the main flagship stars of that golden generation filled with La Masia players. The number ‘10’ jersey needed to go to this type of player and thus form a new tradition at the club. As such, the player who is taking this huge responsibility is none other than Ansu Fati.
An academy youngster who is already on his way to becoming a great player who has a few precocious records under his belt. Despite having one of the most daunting responsibilities this early in his career, Ansu didn’t hesitate when offered the number. The club made the announcement through a video where they made the sensational reveal. Amongst other news, Ousmane Dembele is taking Griezmann’s vacant number ‘7’ jersey and Yusuf Demir will take the number ‘11’. As far as the rest numbers go, you can check them out down below.
