The Manchester United legend leaves DC United after failing to lead them to the MLS playoffs.

Wayne Rooney will reportedly take charge at Birmingham as he ends his spell with DC United at Major League Soccer (MLS).

DC United’s 2-0 victory over New York City turned out to be Rooney’s final match in MLS as his side failed to secure a place in the playoffs.

The club’s CEO, Jason Levien, said after the game: “We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time.”

He added: “We are grateful to Wayne Rooney for all he has done for our club and for soccer in the nation’s capital, first as a DC United player and captain and most recently as our coach.”

Rooney arrived at MLS in 2018, joining DC United as a player. He returned to the club as a manager last summer after ending a nightmarish spell in charge of Derby County.

The Manchester United legend will now head back to England, where he is expected to continue his managerial journey. According to BBC 5 Live, Rooney will replace Birmingham manager John Eustace in the coming days. Rooney’s former teammates, Ashley Cole and John O’Shea, will reportedly join him in the club’s coaching staff.

Birmingham currently sit sixth in the Championship after claiming 18 points from 11 matches under Eustace.
