The club and player parted ways on Tuesday after mutually agreeing to end their contract.
Manchester United’s decision to part company with Cristiano Ronaldo did not surprise Wayne Rooney, who says the club had ‘no other option’.
Less than a week after Ronaldo said United had ‘betrayed’ him and that he had no respect for manager Erik ten Hag in his interview with Piers Morgan, the club and player formally cut ties with each other on Tuesday.

“I’ve said it many times, he’s one of the best players of all time. It’s sad to see it ending this way, but I think there was no other option after his interview and the way he attacked the club,” Rooney told Sports18 about his former teammate’s departure from Old Trafford.
“Am I surprised? No. But it’s a shame because he’s been a fantastic servant to the club. I wish him the best wherever he goes.”
Ronaldo leaves United with a record of 145 goals and 64 assists in 346 appearances across two spells at the club.
The Portugal captain won nine trophies during his first stint at the Theatre of Dreams, including three Premier League titles and the Champions League.
