As Derby County’s manager’s seat remains unfilled, Wayne Rooney opened up about his aspirations to take on the job this season.

Wayne Rooney has repeatedly stated he wants to become a manager after he decides to hang up his boots for good. In fact, he’s already been working as a player/manager since he arrived to play for the Rams. When Phillip Cocu arrived at the club, Rooney agreed to remain as a player while he learned new ideas from the Dutchman.

Now that he’s been sacked by the Derby County owners, Wayne Rooney is one of the people competing to take the job. Contrary to what people might think, the England legend is getting closer to retirement by the minute. This new journey in his career seems increasingly more exciting for Wayne, he thinks he is ready to take the next step.

While the club decides to choose between him and another two choices who are already at the club. Rooney is already campaigning for the job with press appearances that can get him closer to it.

Wayne thanks Cocu for his teachings.

When asked by Sky Sports if coaching Derby County was his aspiration, Rooney said the following: “I’m ambitious, of course I want to go into management. I wouldn’t be an ambitious person if I sat here and said I didn’t want the job.

“Right now, there’s an opportunity for the four of us here to try and lead this team, for however long that is. It’s an opportunity for us to show the different ideas we’ve got and get this team back on track.

“It’s been a strange week. We have to say a big thank you to Phillip, I’ve learned a lot in my first coaching role here. But, I think the change was needed. We’ve not had a great run of form and it’s an opportunity for myself, Liam, Justin and Shay to bring some new ideas and almost a new identity to the team.”
