The former Manchester United captain thinks the battle for the Premier League’s coveted fourth spot will be between Tottenham and Arsenal.

Wayne Rooney has tipped Tottenham’s experience to give them the upper hand over Arsenal in the Premier League top-four race.

The Derby County manager also thinks Manchester United’s current form rules them out, despite his old club lying just three points behind the two north London sides in seventh place in the standings.

Arsenal, meanwhile, missed a chance to reclaim fourth spot on Monday after a 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. They remain behind Spurs in fifth place on goal difference.

‘It’s between Tottenham and Arsenal’

The Gunners still have a game in hand over Spurs, but Rooney thinks experience grants Antonio Conte’s side a key advantage.

“I think it’s Arsenal or Tottenham. It’s between the two of them,” he said on Sky Sports.

“I look at Manchester United’s form of late, I don’t think they’re going to challenge for it. It’s between Tottenham and Arsenal and I think Tottenham have got the experience in the squad, I give them the upper hand.

‘It’s almost like no one wants that fourth place. I think that’s the inconsistency of the teams below Manchester City and Liverpool.

“I think they’ve set the marker. They’re two incredible teams who perform every week, and the teams below them, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham, they are a little bit inconsistent and that shows in their league position.”

Arsenal will hope to prove Rooney wrong, starting on Saturday at home to Brighton.
