After waiting for more than a year, we can already tell you that Wayne Rooney is closer than ever to start a new job at Derby County.

Wayne Rooney’s dream new job is closer to becoming a reality by next week. That’s right, the English football legend has been trying to make a transition from player to full-time manager since he arrived at Derby County. Owner Mel Morris did make a promise to Wayne when he signed the star.

The deal was to sign him as a player and eventually offer him the manager’s seat as his very first adventure. Phillip Cocu has been the manager at Derby during the last few months but results aren’t going his way so far. This situation has taken a new turn as the Rams approach a crucial game against Watford next weekend.

Bad results have taken Cocu’s situation to an extreme. If Derby doesn’t win the next match, Morris will sack the Dutch manager and give Wayne a chance.

Rooney’s predilection for management.

Ever since Louis van Gaal coached Manchester United, Wayne started showing interest in the position. He repeatedly stayed at the end of the training sessions next to Ryan Giggs in order to learn new things. All that work is about to pay off at Derby County, where Rooney could take over in less than a week.

Initially, the England legend will take the squad with John Gregory as his assistant manager. The 66-year-old coach is a familiar face at Derby, where he managed during 2003. Rooney is set to learn everything he can from Gregory before completely taking over the squad. We only have to wait and see if Cocu loses against Watford, that’s exactly when Rooney’s clause will activate and he will take over.

Also, this isn’t the first time a former player takes over this squad. Frank Lampard recently reached a level of success with the Rams before taking over Chelsea. Rooney’s goal is to emulate what his former England teammate did.
