With his PSG contract officially expired, Lionel Messi has arrived in the US to complete his free transfer to MLS club Inter Miami.
Lionel Messi arrived at Ft. Lauderdale airport on Tuesday with his wife and children for an unveiling ceremony to be hosted by Inter Miami CF, his new MLS club.
The event, dubbed “The Unveil” is expected to take place on Sunday at 18:00 (ET) at DRV PNK Stadium. Inter Miami released a statement on Tuesday with the details. The MLS club didn’t specifically mention Messi in the press release. It instead teased that it would be a “major unveiling event”. Season ticket holders will get free admission.
Inter Miami will be the third club of Messi’s professional career. The 36-year-old previously plied his trade in Europe, playing for Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona. He played a combined 853 games for both teams, scoring 704 goals and dishing out 338 assists.
Messi is the most decorated footballer in history alongside Dani Alves with 43 major honors. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will now take his talents stateside. He will reunite with his former Argentina and Barcelona manager, Tata Martino.
Ex-Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets, a former teammate of Messi’s, will join the Argentinean pair. Together, the three men hope to revive Miami’s season. The club currently sits bottom of the Eastern Conference, with 18 points from 21 games.
Inter plans to debut its superstar signing on July 21 in a League Cup game against Mexican side Cruz Azul.
