Southampton have moved to keep captain James Ward-Prowse at the Sait Mary’s Stadium with an improved five-year deal.

Despite suffering their worst league defeat, Southampton managed to finish 11th in Premier League. They were only seven points adrift of Europa League qualifying slots.

The club are in the right direction under Ralph Hasenhuttl and will be hoping for a top-half finish next season. They need to keep hold of their best players and the Saints hierarchy are busy in ensuring this.

At the top of their priority list is James Ward-Prowse. The 25-year-old was their standout performer at the base of their midfield.

Ward-Prowse is captain and a Southampton youth academy graduate. He has been with the club throughout his professional career and his committed his future to the club.

Ward-Prowse was elated with his five-year contract and thanked the Saints for their investment in him since the age of 8.

“I think everybody knows it’s a club that’s very close to my heart,” Ward-Prowse told Southampton FC’s official website.

“I started out here as an eight-year-old and just had that goal of wanting to reach the first team, and my appreciation for the club is so big, because the people within it and the infrastructure has allowed me to follow my dream as a young boy who wanted to play professional football.”

“They’ve given me every opportunity and every helping hand along the way to reach that target and for me again it’s another opportunity to repay that faith to everybody who’s played a part in my journey up until now.”
