The Manchester City legend will take on his first managerial role in England after two seasons in Belgium.

Vincent Kompany has become the new manager of Championship side Burnley.

The 36-year-old takes on his first coaching job in England after leaving Anderlecht by mutual consent last month following two seasons in charge of the Belgian club.

He replaces caretaker boss Mike Jackson, who took over from the fired Sean Dyche in April, in the dugout for the 2022/23 campaign.

“Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honor to be appointed first-team manager,” Kompany told the club’s website.

“I’m excited by the challenge ahead. I’m looking forward to getting to work with the players and creating a positive, winning team for our fans when we return to Turf Moor.

“I’ve been impressed by the board’s vision for the club which aligns with my own. I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season.”

How has Kompany done as a coach?

After leaving Manchester City in 2019, Kompany returned to boyhood club Anderlecht as a player-manager. It was his first coaching job. He, however, relinquished the role following his first four games to concentrate on playing, as the club had scored just two points.

Kompany later hung up his boots and became the manager in August 2020. He led the 34-time Belgian champions to fourth and third-place finishes respectively in the Belgian league. The club also reached the Belgian Cup final in his last season.

Overall, Kompany recorded 41 wins, 30 draws, and 19 defeats in 90 matches between August 2020 and June 2022.

The former Manchester City captain now returns to England, hoping to lead the relegated Burnley back to the Premier League at the first time of asking in the Championship.
