Ronaldo’s disallowed goal against Serbia sadly wasn’t the first time he had been denied a goal for Portugal, and a spectacular one at that.

Cristiano Ronaldo was denied a goal in the dying moments of Portugal’s 2-2 draw against Serbia on Saturday night.

The 36-year-old thought he had won the World Cup qualifier for his country during injury-time. He latched onto a cross inside the box and poked the ball past Serbia keeper Marko Dmitrovic towards the empty goal.

But as the ball appeared to cross the goal-line, it was cleared and the referee, Danny Makkelie, waved for play to continue – much to Ronaldo’s utter disbelief.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot was in but there is no goal-line technology from soccer

Sadly, though, this isn’t the first time a lack of goal-line technology has cost him.

Ronaldo scored a brilliant bicycle-kick in a European qualifier against Azerbaijan in October 2006. It was a marvelous effort, one that any top goalscorer would be proud to claim, and one that shouldn’t have been ruled out.

Replays clearly showed the ball had crossed the line before it bounced off the top bar and into the Azerbaijan keeper’s hands.

Ronaldo will hope for better luck in Portugal’s next World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg on Tuesday night before he reports back to Juventus.
