Brazilian forward Rony missed his chance to score a penalty for Palmeiras after he tried to copy Bruno Fernandes’ technique.
It doesn’t get much worse than this, does it? Picture this scenario: you’re playing in the FIFA Club World Cup and your team is representing a whole continent of wonderful technicians. So what do you do? You try to draw inspiration from some great penalty takers in order to assure the ball hits the net.
This idea didn’t go all too well for Palmeiras’ player Rony. The 25-year-old was set to take one of the Libertadores’ champions attempts at their penalty shootout against Al Ahly. However, Rony created a weird mix between Pogba, Neymar and Bruno’s penalty-taking styles and ended up creating a big mess for himself.
The Palmeiras’ forward began with a very long run, which typically isn’t a good sign for a player about to strike a penalty. Rony looked quite nervous and decided to stop moving forward halfway through his run. As if that wasn’t enough, the Brazilian decided to hop before shooting the ball, Bruno Fernandes style.
However, Rony failed miserably and allowed Mohamed El Shenawy to make an easy safe at the center of the goal. Moreover, to add up to Palmeiras’ woes, former Serie A player Felipe Melo also missed his chance from the penalty stop. Therefore, the Libertadores champions went home empty-handed once again with no wins and no goals.
