It happened on Zenit’s Champions League opener against Club Brugge, Dejan Lovren scored a true screamer while Van Dijk is injured.

Liverpool must be regretting letting Dejan Lovren leave right about now, he could be replacing Virgil van Dijk after the big man’s injury. The Reds’ star defender just confirmed he will be out of the game for at least 8 months. Van Dijk suffered an ACL injury on his right knee. This major setback comes in the same week we are getting an outstanding goal from Dejan Lovren.

The former Reds’ defender was Virgil’s companion on the defensive line when they conquered the UEFA Champions League in 2019. A Croatian international who also reached the 2018 World Cup final but wasn’t good enough to remain in Liverpool for much longer.

Today he gets vindication after scoring a truly spectacular goal in the Champions League opening match between Zenit and Club Brugge. Dejan took a ball in the final third. He released a potent strike from a distance that gave his side the equalizer with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Brugge responded in dramatic style.

Dejan Lovren’s strike was something else but Club Brugge wasn’t going to allow this setback to control their final result. As part of Group F, the Belgian squad can’t afford to lose any points during the relatively easier games.

They needed to win this first match against Zenit if they wanted to have a chance to qualify against clubs such as Borussia Dortmund and Lazio. All goals of this match came during the second half. Emmanuel Dennis scored the opener after several repeated attempts that were rejected by Lovren and his defensive teammates.

The Belgian squad got the winning goal during the final minute after a brilliant collective effort that was finished by De Ketelaere. Lovren’s effort was only useful to remind Liverpool fans that they sold him right before Van Dijk’s serious injury.
