The Southampton manager was overcome with emotion on the sidelines after grabbing a famous victory over the Premier League champions.

Ralph Hasenhuttl joked that his post-match tears were caused by the wind rather than the victory itself, but still hailed his side’s commitment and performance to pull one over Liverpool at St Mary’s on Monday.

Danny Ings’ second-minute opener was enough for all three points. The former Reds striker returned to haunt Jurgen Klopp’s men by lobbing the ball past Alisson Becker to condemn the visitors to a second defeat this season.

Not only did Southampton’s four-match winless run end, but they also became the first club to beat all seven Premier League champions in the season after a title win.

But the most notable moment wasn’t the win itself, or the fact it took Liverpool 75 minutes to get a single shot on target, it was Hasenhuttl on his knees in tears.

“There were tears in my eyes – because of the wind!” the Austrian joked to BBC. “When you see our guys fighting with everything they have it makes me really proud. You need to have the perfect game against Liverpool and I think we did that.”

The former RB Leipzig boss got his first win against Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp after losing his first four clashes against the German.

Speaking later in his post-match conference, Hasenhuttl said: “My history against Jurgen [Klopp] so far, he is the only coach I have never taken points against so far.

“I was joking with him one or two months ago at the Premier League meeting and said that perhaps once I will have a chance to take a point against you.

“But it was a perfect evening I think. Because of the effort, maybe we deserved to take a point. It is not important if you deserve it or not, you take it. That’s it.”
