VIDEO: Gio Reyna makes history with the United States

It happened during the United States’ friendly match against Panama on Monday, Gio Reyna made history with his national team. 

Youngster Gio Reyna keeps making history with the United States National Team and as a professional player. His father, Claudio Reyna, must be extremely proud of his son’s development. To those who don’t know, Reyna Senior is one of the USMNT’s most prominent players in history.

As a midfielder, he was part of a prolific generation that is still amongst the top to ever do it for the country. Gio took that hereditary skill and got to a whole new level after making his debut in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund. Similar to what happened to Christian Pulisic, the youngster is taking massive leaps towards becoming a great player.

Today was an ideal moment for him to score his first international goal during a friendly against Panama. Given that the Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers are completely suspended, all teams from that area need their activity. Reyna for 68 minutes and proved he has what it takes to play in this squad. 

Reyna makes history through a set-piece. 

The Borussia Dortmund player just turned 18 on November 13, which was last Friday. Only three days later, he starred in the United States’ 6-2 victory against the Panama national team. Although he only scored one goal, it was a beautiful free-kick to open the scoreboard for his side. A shot he took straight to the low corner that made him the third youngest scorer in the United States’ history.

Even though the final result reflected no more goals from Gio, it’s clear he has a bright future ahead of him in the national team. The folks at Borussia Dortmund must be buzzing with their young star’s development as well. It’s a great day for both Gio and his father, as the Reyna last name keeps making history in US Soccer.
