The Manchester United and Chelsea game was a dull affair, to say the least, with Patrice Evra and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s post-match debate easily more entertaining.
Anyone who had high hopes of another classic encounter between Manchester United and Chelsea on Saturday was quickly left disappointed.
The Premier League showdown, arguably the biggest fixture of the weekend, ended in a dull goalless stalemate.
Aside from Edouard Mendy nearly putting the ball into his own net, the game didn’t burst into life until the last 10 minutes of the opening half. The Chelsea keeper then pulled off superb saves from Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata.
There was also the unsuccessful penalty appeal when Harry Maguire climbed over Cesar Azpilicueta. Although Thiago Silva was lucky that he went unpunished for clipping Rashford inside the box before the break.
Not even the second-half introductions of United stars Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood, or even Hakim Ziyech for Chelsea, could turn the game on its head.
Evra, speaking in his punditry role for Sky Sports post-match, then slammed Chelsea’s conservative approach – which Hasselbaink disagreed with, of course!
But the Frenchman also had some harsh words for his former club United by labeling the players as too scared to pass the ball before things got heated when he accused Hasselbaink of almost breaking his leg in a game back in 2004.
“You remember the nine stitches in my leg?” Evra asked. “You nearly broke my leg. You don’t remember 2004 against Chelsea?
“I got nine stitches. This guy is always smiling but you went hard on me!
“But did I finish the game? Yes! And did we beat you? Yes, of course!”
