It happened during the Premier League’s Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United match, an attacking midfielder scored a Puskas Award contender.

Even though the Puskas Award won’t happen until next year, a Crystal Palace midfielder just scored a solid contender for the accolade. In the same vein as last year with Son Heung-min’s amazing solo goal, Oberechi Eze scored a fresh Maradonian solo effort. The Greenwich-born player took a ball near his team’s own box and drove it all the way to the other side. In his path, he cleared the ball past four players and released a beautifully placed shot.

Poetry in motion that happens once again in the Premier League. We don’t get to see goals like this one too often but when we do, it’s obvious we enjoy them a little too much. With this goal, the Eagles reached 19 points in the Premier League. A result that takes them a little further away from the relegation spots.

Can Eze’s goal win the Puskas Award?

As we’ve said before, Son Heung-min’s Puskas Award winning goal was scored near the end of 2019. Despite waiting nearly a full year, it was still considered the best goal of 2020 as it was part of the voting process. Eze’s goal is good-enough to be considered throughout 2021 for this prize without a shred of doubt.

The manufacture, the clearing of rivals, and the silky finish make it one of the best goals of the season already. Although we will get to see other great goals, this one is definitely going to compete for the award. Eberechi Eze can rest assured he will at least get a nomination for his wonderful solo effort.
