Raphael Varane’s Real Madrid exit has been one of the most unexpected transfers of the current window. The Spanish club agreed to a €50 million fee for one of their best defensive players after Sergio Ramos left for free. To all Real Madrid supporters, Varane leaving left the club in a complicated situation. It is clear that he made this decision to leave Los Blancos but we still hadn’t heard his reasoning behind this decision.
Today, Raphael Varane finally responded to all these questions. In hindsight, his decision was purely professional because he was looking for a new challenge in his already impressive career. After winning everything in Real Madrid, Varane understood that the Premier League is where the highest level of football is currently taking place. Rafa wants to be a part of this and Manchester United was one of the few places where he could aspire to win all trophies again.

Perhaps most people don’t know this but Sir Alex Ferguson himself attempted to sign Raphael Varane back in 2011. Back then, the player’s family thought going to Manchester was too early for him but their paths were bound to eventually cross. This is what Varane told the Red Devils’ website: “There had been a lot of rumors and a lot of people speaking about me and Manchester United since 2011, when Sir Alex Ferguson came to my mother’s house.
“When it was real, that was when I spoke with my club, and I felt it was a real opportunity to play in the Premier League for Manchester United. I think it was a good moment because of a lot of things, but I think the most important one is it’s a new challenge and it’s a big motivation to start in a new league in a big club like Manchester United. This opportunity was amazing for me, so I chose this change for me and my family. They have come with me. You feel when things are a good moment and this was the right moment.”
