A despondent Virgil van Dijk attempts to demonstrate what cost his side two points in the match against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The Netherlands were held to a goalless draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their Nations League A Group 1 match.

Sunday’s result leaves the Oranje’s chances of progressing into the Nations League in doubts. They currently sit in the second position in their group, level on points with Poland.

Holland’s best chance came in the final quarter of an hour when Frenkie de Jong’s close-range shot at the near post was saved by Ibrahim Sehic. Sehic then pulled another breathtaking save as he pushed out Luuk de Jong’s powerful header.

A couple of other missed chances saw the scoreline remain unchanged till the fulltime whistle.

The 0-0 scoreline also means that Frank de Boer is still awaiting a first win in his tenure as the national manager, having handed a defeat in his first match in-charge at the hands of Mexico.

Speaking after the match, Virgil van Dijk was visibly frustrated after his side failed to find the back of the net in their third successive game.

Van Dijk told NOS: “The pace was too slow in possession, especially in the first half. The alternation between looking for depth and getting into the ball was not good in the first half. That made it easy for them to defend.

“In the second half we let the ball go around a little faster and the organization was better, but you don’t get very big chances, which I find disappointing.

“It could have been different, but I am disappointed that we did not win.”
