The Reds will look to claim their first victory of the new season at Old Trafford.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes Manchester United will try to bounce back from their poor start to the campaign when they meet Liverpool this weekend.

Both arch-rivals come into the game on the back of underwhelming starts to the new campaign.

Liverpool have registered two draws against Crystal Palace and Fulham while Man Utd have slipped to the bottom of the table after embarrassing defeats against Brighton and Brentford.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming North West derby, Van Dijk said: “It’s massive, but it’s not about making a statement. We want to win and do everything that’s possible to win there.

“This year they’ve had a difficult start and we’ve not had the best start that we wanted either, so it will be interesting.

“Obviously they’re not in the best situation confidence-wise probably, but it’s the perfect game to turn it around for them.”

Liverpool have managed to beat Man Utd in their last two meetings at Old Trafford. The Reds have a chance to write history by making it three in a row this Monday.

“Over the years it’s proven tough for us to win there, though last year was a great result, we can’t deny it,” Van Dijk said.

“This week we showed a lot of good spirit and fight in training, and we’ve got to bring that to the game on Monday.”
