Big things were expected of the Dutchman when he arrived at Old Trafford but he’s nothing more than a bit-part player at present.

Donny van de Beek is “not good enough for Manchester United,” says former Chelsea and Aston Villa man Tony Cascarino.

Van de Beek struggled for consistent minutes on the pitch in his debut season at Manchester United. Early into his second season at the club, he still has the same issue as he has been afforded just only minutes of action so far.

The midfielder has started only two games in 2021-22, with Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Scott McTominay, and Nemanja Matic all above him in the squad pecking order.

“I was lucky enough to see him as a younger player, he’s not good enough for Manchester United,” Cascarino told about Van de Beek, talking to talkSPORT.

“I actually said that when he joined. I said he’s not the level of what people expect of a £40m player.

“I think they wanted a very good footballing type goalscoring midfielder, he’s pleasant.

“Remember when Everton signed Davy Klaassen, he went there from Ajax with a great record and reputation.

“But it’s the danger of signing Dutch players playing in a league for the best teams and getting regular goals. There have been great centre forwards like Ruud van Nistelrooy but generally midfielders you’re getting I find it hard to imagine them in the Premier League.”
