USWNT were knocked out of the Women’s World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Megan Rapinoe has described his last game for USWNT as a “dark comedy” after missing a penalty against Sweden.

U.S. faced Sweden in the last-16 round of the Women’s World Cup in Melbourne. After 120 minutes, a goalless draw saw the two sides face off in the penalties.

Rapinoe had a chance to win the game for the U.S. after Rebecka Blomqvist’s missed penalty. But the USWNT legend missed the target with a poor shot, enabling the Swedes to come back and snatch the victory.

“I thought we played really well. I’m so happy for us that we went out like that, playing the way we did,” she told FOX Sports.

“I mean this is like a sick joke for me personally. I’m just like this is dark comedy that I missed a penalty. I still just feel really grateful and joyful.

“I know it’s the end and that’s sad but to know this is really the only time I’ve been in one of these shows, how much success I’ve had and how much I’ve loved playing for this team. It’s been an honour.”

Rapinoe ends her international career with 63 goals in 202 caps for the USWNT. The OL Reign star has already confirmed she will retire from football after the current NWSL season.
