The controversy between Reyna’s family and Berhalter extended beyond USMNT’s World Cup campaign.
Greg Berhalter has opened up on the “sad” situation regarding his feud with Claudio Reyna and his family.
The situation started when Berhalter criticized an unnamed player who “was clearly not meeting expectations on and off the field”.
Reyna then confirmed he was the player in question, apologizing for his performance in an Instagram post. However, the feud escalated when Reyna’s family accused Berhalter of domestic violence in 1992.
An investigation by U.S. Soccer has confirmed the manager has committed the act. However, the federation has allowed Berhalter to continue his job as USMNT‘s coach.
Reyna’s family, on the other hand, were criticized for their continuing meddling in the national team affairs.
“I would just say it’s a sad situation,” he told the Telegraph.
“We are talking about people you have known for over three decades. It’s sad and it’s in some way traumatic. But it’s something you have to deal with.”
He added: “The only way to describe it is sad.
“It is unfortunate that this is the world we live in. I think it diverted a lot of attention away from a strong performance at the World Cup.
“It diverted a lot of attention away from how good the team is and how strong it was. Team mentality.
“The guys were amazing at the World Cup. So focused, so disciplined and for a young team it was really incredible to see from a coaching standpoint.”
