After Russia launched a full-scale invasion in Ukraine, the location for the 2022 Champions League final is now in doubt.
UEFA has announced plans to move the Champions League final from St Petersburg because of the escalating situation between Russia and Ukraine.
The 68,000-capacity Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg was supposed to host the final on May 28. But after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a military invasion in Ukraine, all that could change.
In a statement on Thursday, UEFA confirmed president Aleksander Ceferin has called an ‘extraordinary meeting’ for Friday to discuss the circumstances.
“Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA President has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET, in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions,” read the statement.
“Further communication will be made after the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee.”
