UEFA have decided to permit the partial return of fans in the Super Cup final with the motive of testing their ‘Return to Play’ plans.

The 2019/20 football season faced substantial interruption due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Italy became the first nation to take action in regard to the growing threat when they suspended football matches on March 9, and soon the other European nations followed suit.

French Ligue 1 and Dutch Eredivisie even went as far as to bring an end to their campaigns prematurely.

By mid-June, the cases due to the virus gradually started going down and the leagues began planning the return of their respective seasons. However, strict health measures were still in place such as social distancing and matches behind closed doors.

UEFA recently announced that they have decided to allow fans to attend the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary on September 24 when Champions League winners Bayern Munich take on Europa League conquerors Sevilla in the Super Cup clash.

An official statement on the official website of the administrative body of Europan football read: “The UEFA Executive Committee today decided to allow the 2020 UEFA Super Cup to be played on 24 September 2020 in Budapest with a reduced number of spectators – up to 30 percent of the capacity of the stadium – in order to study precisely the impact of spectators on the UEFA Return to Play Protocol.

“It was confirmed that all other UEFA matches shall continue to be played behind closed doors until further notice, as initially decided by the UEFA Executive Committee on 9 July 2020.”
