UEFA could strip Russia of Champions League final after Vladimir Putin sent forces into Donetsk.

UEFA could be forced to strip Russia of the Champions League final in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The final was set to be held in St Petersburg on May 28 but growing pressure on football’s governing body has them searching for an alternative host city.

“Uefa is constantly and closely monitoring the situation,” UEFA said in a statement. “At present, there are no plans to change the venue.”

British PM Boris Johnson has said there should be “no chance of holding football tournaments in a Russia that invades sovereign countries”.

He added: “[The UK will] continue to do everything we can to stand by the people of Ukraine.”

The Daily Star have claimed Wembley is being considered as a possible alternative, especially if two English teams make the final.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City are all competing for a spot for the final, with Pep Guardiola’s side touted as favourites to win the competition.

Additionally, Istanbul could be given a chance to host the game after being replaced by Porto last year due to Covid-19.

The BBC add that UEFA are also in contact with Dynamo Kiev and Sporting Lisbon over their Youth League last-16 tie which is scheduled to be played in the Ukrainian capital on March 2.

Zenit St Petersburg are the only club from Russia or Ukraine to remain in a UEFA competition this season. They lost 3-2 to Real Betis in the first leg of their Europa League tie in Seville last week and play the return leg of the fixture this Friday, February 25.
