Chelsea prepare a world-record bid for Premier League defender

The Blues are preparing to launch a world-record transfer bid for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana.

Despite Leicester having already rejected an offer worth £70 million, Chelsea remain determined. Thomas Tuchel’s side plan to launch a second bid for Fofana. It’s unclear whether this offer will match Leicester’s £85 million asking price, but it should still be over £80 million.

If this deal goes through, Fofana will surpass Harry Maguire, who joined Manchester United from Leicester for £80 million in 2018, as the world’s most expensive defender. [Football London]

Rabiot to join Man Utd?

Manchester United and Juventus have settled on an initial £15 million agreement for the transfer of midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

The Red Devils are also in talks with the 27-year-old Frenchman over personal terms. The negotiations are at an early stage. Juve are happy to sell, but the deal also needs approval from Rabiot’s mother and agent, Veronique, before it can proceed.

Despite Rabiot’s potential arrival, United manager Erik ten Hag still hopes to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. [The Guardian]

Silva-Barcelona deal looking unlikely

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva looks increasingly unlikely to join Barcelona this summer.

Transfer talks have not progressed, much to the frustration of Silva’s representatives. There is still time for a deal, of course, but it’s looking more probable that the 27-year-old will stay at City instead.

Silva is under contract with the Premier League champions until June 2025, and given his importance to Pep Guardiola’s side, could command a transfer fee of around €80 million. [Mundo Deportivo – in Spanish]

Inter confirm Sanchez departure

Inter Milan have confirmed the contract termination of forward Alexis Sanchez by mutual agreement.

The 33-year-old Chilean is reportedly on the verge of a free transfer to Ligue 1 club Marseille. He scored 20 goals in 109 games for Inter following his transfer from Manchester United in 2019.

“The club would like to wholeheartedly thank Alexis for these last three seasons, in which the Nerazzurri won three major honors, and we wish him all the best for his future career,” read a club statement.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique is prepared to accept a second salary cut.

The 35-year-old Catalan previously lowered his wages in 2021 by signing a new deal. He could do so again this year to help Barcelona rectify the issues with their wage structure.
