After back-to-back defeats in the Premier League and FA Cup final, Alan Hudson has urged Thomas Tuchel to sign a prolific midfielder.

N’Golo Kante would thrive in the Chelsea midfield alongside a player similar to club legend Frank Lampard, says Alan Hudson.

The Blues have been remarkable in defense since Thomas Tuchel became the manager in January. Their lack of attacking threat, though, concerns Hudson.

The former Blues midfielder believes Tuchel needs to sign a new striker to replace Timo Werner, who is not ‘up to scratch’. Tottenham star Harry Kane is the man he would like to see lead the attack for next season.

Hudson also cited the importance of Tuchel signing another goal-scoring midfielder like the club’s record scorer Lampard, who he believes would link up well with Kante.

“The one thing for certain is Werner is not up to scratch,” Hudson told Caught Offside.

“I’ve said for some time that a Harry Kane is needed. He would have buried that first-half chance against Arsenal, and would’ve made a difference had he played in a blue shirt at Wembley.”

Hudson made 175 appearances across two spells for Chelsea between 1969 and 1984. The Englishman was also a part of the team that defeated Real Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1971.

He added: “I did a podcast about us winning the Cup Winners’ Cup with Charlie Cooke, John Dempsey, and John Boyle. We spoke of the importance of a Peter Osgood who scores in big matches, much like Didier Drogba.

“This is lacking in this present Chelsea team. And Frank Lampard scoring 25 goals a season from midfield would be a dream alongside Kante today.

“If only. We’ve allowed standards to drop.”

Finding a midfielder with the attacking nous of Lampard, however, will be easier said than done.

For now, though, Tuchel’s priority is on signing a new striker. Kane is one target on Chelsea’s shortlist alongside Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku.

Out of the above three mentioned options, Kane could be the most probable option. The Spurs frontman has reportedly handed in a transfer request for this summer.
