An integral member of the Blues squad, the Brazilian has less than a year remaining on his current deal at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel has no doubts that Thiago Silva can earn a contract extension at Chelsea provided he continues to deliver “top performances.”

Chelsea were water-tight at the back in the second half of the last season and continue to be so this season – and Silva is a fundamental factor for their sound defense.

The center-back played a pivotal role for the London side last season, helping them experience Champions League glory and secure a top-four Premier League finish.

Having committed to a one-year contract with the club after joining them on a free transfer last summer, the former Paris Saint-Germain man extended his stay at Stamford Bridge for another year in June.

Once again, the clock is ticking down as Silva, who turned 37 years old on September 22, has entered the final few months of his contract.

“It’s on him. I cannot answer this question right now but hopefully he can continue to perform at this kind of level,” Tuchel told the press (via official Chelsea website).

“That’s all it needs to stay here. It’s as easy and as clear as that. We want top performances and when you play for Chelsea, you need to deliver, and this is what he’s doing.

“That he is a top professional is a given, because otherwise it would not be possible that he plays on that kind of level for so many years, but the age does not play a role. The only question we need to ask at the end of the season is whether he is still on the level that we need at Chelsea to compete for everything in every competition – yes or no, it’s as easy as that.

“And we have time for that. We don’t need to answer that question right now, but he’s in a good place and we are happy.”
