The Blues’ record signing has proved his money’s worth by scoring three goals in his first three Premier League appearances this season.

Romelu Lukaku’s personality and self-confidence help him make ‘the difference’ for Chelsea, says Thomas Tuchel.

After a decade-long wait, Lukaku scored his first goal at Stamford Bridge as a Blues player in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa. The Belgian bagged a brace with two well-taken finishes in both halves.

His performance on the day was precisely why Chelsea opted to re-sign him from Inter Milan for a club-record €115 million fee last month.

“Today he was the difference. He adds another profile in our squad,” said Chelsea manager Tuchel in a post-match conference after the victory over Aston Villa.

“He has the kind of personality and self-confidence, he knows what he’s up to, he wants to score and help the team, and he has the confidence and the composure to do it. They were two very difficult goals. There were no easy tap-ins, and he made the difference for us to get three points today.

“He adds something to the group that we did not have in this capacity so far. So he was very, very good, and we are very happy.”

Lukaku could make his first Champions League appearance for Chelsea in Tuesday’s Group H opener at home to Russian side Zenit.
