After starring against Real Sociedad, Axel Tuanzebe has revealed his ambitions with United in the Europa League.
After bowing out of the Champions League group stage, Axel Tuanzeve says he is all out for glory with United in the Europa League.
A frustrating group-stage exit was endured by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in elite continental competition. They were forced to make do with the Europa League.
After seeing off Real Sociedad without hassle, United will be waiting anxiously for their next opponents in the last 16 of the competition.
The Red Devils made it to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season and the United defender wants better this time around.
Tuanzebe told the club’s official website ahead of Friday’s last-16 draw: “We want to win the competition. We are in it to compete. What is the point in being in it to just play in it? We want to win.”
“It was disappointing to get knocked out of the Champions League so this is the second best thing.”
United lost three semi-finals last term and Tuanzebe has nothing but gained experience from those disappointments:
“They’ll always stay with you, it’s a learning curve, it’s an experience,” he added.
“You don’t want to feel like that again, that’s the most important thing and you always remember the feeling of losing – even more so than winning. You try your best and do everything to ensure that doesn’t happen again.”
Due to injuries, Tuanzebe had to feature in midfield and not his natural role at centre-back against Real Sociedad. The 23-year-old says his future is in defence but he remains happy to play wherever he’s needed.
“I am a versatile player, my natural place is central defence but I did it for the team. It is a while since I played in midfield but most important thing is that we are through.” he concluded.
“The season has been up and down for me and we need to get more minutes and momentum.”
