During an interview with Vanity Fair. Francesco Totti revealed the main reason he eventually decided to hang up his boots at AS Roma.
Francesco Totti is hands down, the biggest AS Roma legend in history. Talking about ‘Il Capitano’ with the club’s supporters means getting into an hour-long list of attributes they can give him. He is the most important figure in Roman football history and you simply cannot say anything negative about him in front of his supporters.
The former player just granted an interview to Vanity Fair where he spoke about his retirement. As he was pushing 40, Totti was basically forced out of the squad despite having the backing of all supporters. When he initially revealed his decision to step aside, Totti made the world believe he was truly done with football.
However, years later we discovered he was pushed out of the squad against his own wishes. Everybody was looking for someone to blame for this, but we were looking in the wrong place this whole time. As it turns out, the main culprit for Totti’s retirement is the person we least imagined.
Spalletti’s role in Totti’s retirement decision.
Manager Luciano Spalletti sold his apparent position quite well, he made everybody believe he was feeling sad over Francesco Totti’s retirement. But he fooled us all, Totti revealed the whole truth in this interview with Vanity Fair.
“The more I tried, the more he looked to break it, looked for provocation, a quarrel or a pretext. I quickly understood that it would be impossible to continue in those conditions. So, for the first time in 25 years, between January and February, I gave up.
“In football you are wrong, we are all wrong. Let’s say I should understand what mood I’m in on that day, how I woke up. Understand if I’m in a good mood. Me being too demanding is nonsense. There’s not a single team-mate or coach among the many I have met, who can tell me to my face: ‘You have decided, you have asked, you have demanded’.
“I will always hold my head high because I trained and I never said ‘do this or do that’. I never asked for anything, apart from being able to win.”
