The former Reds legend John Barnes is sure that Tottenham will not be able to outperform Liverpool and Manchester City.
Tottenham sits second on the Premier League table and did not lose any game since their defeat to Everton in the opening weekend. However, this will not be the scenario later on towards the end of the season according to John Barnes.
Jose Mourinho’s side has been a powerhouse because of the leading men Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son. And unfortunately, Liverpool are dragging themselves through an injury apocalypse. Claims are made that Tottenham could be the potential title winners this season. The talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara said that Mourinho’s men might surpass the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
However, Barnes is firm in his view that the English top-flight is still in the hands of the two top giants. The Liverpool legend told Bonus Code Bets: “Tottenham are doing well. But Manchester City and Liverpool are still the favorites for the title.
“Tottenham ground out a victory against West Brom, a game they could have easily lost. But Tottenham aren’t a team who can continue to do that.
“They don’t play with enough consistency, score enough goals, so they are over and above their own expectations now sitting in the second position. They are title challengers in the sense they will be in the top four, but they won’t finish in the top two.”
In addition, Barnes believes that Tottenham will slip in the later stages of the season. This is also possible even though the Portuguese tactician is able to get the best out of his squad.
Barnes added: “Spurs are always a game away from a disaster or a fan meltdown. And the fans and players will turn on Jose Mourinho as soon as things aren’t going so well.
“They lack the harmony and togetherness that other teams have. The players still don’t look happy to be there. So if Tottenham drops a few points that can easily snowball into something much bigger.
“It is a mentality thing as much as anything else. They will challenge for the third and fourth position at best. But they currently have good momentum that they need to take forward.”
