Tottenham legend Clive Allen has urged Dele Alli to leave the club if he is to gain his full fitness and confidence back.

Tottenham legend Clive Allen says struggling midfielder Dele Alli must leave the club to help rediscover his confidence.

The midfielder endured his latest shocker for Spurs on Thursday as the north Londoners suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Royal Antwerp in the Europa League.

Alli was given only his third start of the season by Jose Mourinho but he played just 45 minutes as the manager substituted him at half-time after another poor outing.

The 24-year-old is yet to complete 90 minutes for Tottenham this season having fallen down the pecking order under Mourinho, who has challenged the midfielder to prove himself worthy of a return to the first-team.

And Allen believes the only way forward for Alli now is to leave, insisting it’s the only way he can boost his rock-bottom confidence.

But he has told Tottenham to loan him out, not sell him, insisting the England international still has a future at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“If Spurs are clever they might well loan him to a team where he could start to find form, which he needs, because he’s desperately short of confidence,” the former Spurs striker told the talkSPORT Breakfast.

“He was very sloppy last night.”

“I think he probably has to move away from Spurs for a while to try and rediscover the doubted talent he has.”

“He’s an incredible player, he has been for Spurs, but I think now you’re looking at a move for him.”

“You can’t keep being substituted at half-time in that manner and not expect something to happen.”

It was the second time this season Alli has been hauled off at the break, having also been benched at half-time of Spurs’ Premier League opener against Everton, which also ended in defeat.
