Ex-England goalkeeper Paul Robinson says Serge Aurier deserves a lot of credit for turning around his fortunes at Tottenham.

Serge Aurier deserved a lot of praise for his improved form at Spurs despite the arrival of Matt Doherty from Wolves.

The 27-year-old came close to leaving the club following the arrival of Matt Doherty which initially saw him fall down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho.

However, Aurier has been one of the top performers for Spurs over the past weeks since he was deployed in the starting XI.

The first of his many praise-worthy performances came in his first Premier League start this season. He grabbed a goal and an assist in Spurs’ emphatic 6-1 thrashing of Manchester United.

Just last weekend, the Ivorian put in a strong shift in defence as a resolute Spurs side held Chelsea to a goalless stalemate at Stamford Bridge.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson admits Aurier has surprised him with his new-found form.

He told Football Insider: “I’m surprised he is still there and I think he might be as well.”

“There was a lot of talk about him moving in over the summer and when Doherty came in it seemed like a certainty.”

“But you have to give him a lot of credit for the way he has kept himself fit. When he has been given his opportunity he has been top class.”

“It is difficult when you feel like you are not wanted by a club. Your mindset can change quickly. A player could down tools and not put 100 per cent in but that cannot be said about Serge Aurier.”

“He has realised that this season is going to be very long and that he will play a lot of football.”

“I have not been one of his biggest fans, defensively, but the arrival of competition in Doherty has seen Aurier up his game.”

Aurier is in contention once again to be in the starting lineup when Spurs take on Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday.
