The Spurs go into their first game after Conte’s sacking without a key defender.

Tottenham defender Emerson Royal has suffered a serious knee injury while being on international duty with Brazil.

The young right-back has already undergone surgery and might not be able to play again this season. A serious blow to Tottenham’s top-four hopes, Royal’s absence comes just after Antonio Conte’s sacking.

The Spurs will start a host of crucial games under interim boss Cristian Stellini. The Italian coach could use Pedro Porro at the right-hand side of Spurs’ backline.

“We can confirm that Emerson Royal suffered a meniscus injury to his left knee while on international duty with Brazil last week,” a club statement reads.

“The defender will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”

This season, Royal has made 32 appearances for Tottenham, becoming a key part of their defence line under Conte. The former Barcelona star picked up a knee injury after his challenge with Sofyan Abrabat in the 90th minute of Brazil‘s friendly defeat against Morocco on Saturday.

Tottenham will take on Everton in their first match after the international break.

Stellini’s side will then meet Brighton, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Manchester United, and Liverpool in their following Premier League fixtures.
