After their 6-1 routing at Newcastle, Spurs have appointed their third new head coach in under a month.
Tottenham have taken decisive action after Sunday’s 6-1 loss to Newcastle United by replacing interim manager Cristian Stellini with his assistant, Ryan Mason.
Stellini had been appointed only last month to replace Antonio Conte. But his inability to inspire the squad has forced Daniel Levy’s hand. The chairman has opted to hand control to Mason, who last coached Spurs in a caretaker role in 2021 following Jose Mourinho’s departure.
Levy made this decision after an inquest into the Newcastle debacle, which involved speaking to the player committee.
“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable,” read a statement from the Tottenham chairman.
“It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the Board, the coaches and [the] players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.
“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.”
Levy added: “Ryan Mason will take over Head Coach duties with immediate effect. Ryan knows the Club and the players well. We shall update further on his coaching staff in due course.”
