A former Spurs striker has explained why the Leicester City manager is the ideal candidate to become Jose Mourinho’s permanent replacement.
Tottenham should “break the bank” for Brandan Rodgers, says Teddy Sheringham as he expects the Leicester City boss to do a “fantastic job” in north London.
A string of subpar performances saw Tottenham relieve Jose Mourinho of his managerial duties days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, which they lost.
Ryan Mason was appointed as the caretaker manager, and Spurs continue their search for Mourinho’s permanent successor.
Ajax’s Erik ten Hag former Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, and Leicester’s Rodgers are some of the names linked with the job. Julian Nagelsmann, who was recently confirmed as the next Bayern Munich manager, was also considered to be on the shortlist.
A former Spurs striker has given his vote to Rodgers, who is on the verge of helping Leicester qualify for the Champions League for the next season.
Sheringham told Gambling.com: “If I had the pick of the bunch and Tottenham were ready to go out and spend big money, which I presume they will, then I would go and break the bank for Brendan Rodgers.
“I think he’s done an outstanding job at the different clubs he’s been at. He knows the Premier League very well, he knows his system and how he wants the game to be played. He takes the game to the opposition, he doesn’t wait to capitalise on other peoples’ mistakes and he likes to control the game a bit like how Pep Guardiola does.
“Given the funds that were available for Jose Mourinho, if Rodgers was backed with the same sort of money then I think he would do a fantastic job.”
