What Is the Jordanian Pro League?

As stated, the Jordanian Pro League is a professional football league in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a prominent Arab country in the Middle East.

It’s also the top-tier league that features two more leagues called the Jordan League Division 1 and the Jordan League Division 2.

The league is one of the older ones in the region, as it was founded in 1944. Teams have competed almost every season since, except for a few years in the late 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Jordan Premier League Season Explained

Since its foundation, the league has typically followed a spring-fall season system, where games are held in a single year. It changed to a fall-spring system employed by many European leagues, but this only lasted from 2002 to 2020, when it returned to the old system.

The only seasons that were not held were the ones in 1948, 1953, 1957-58, 1967-69, while the 1998 season didn’t finish. After that, not a single season was missed, so by 2021, a total of 69 seasons were completed, with the ongoing 2022 being the 70th season on record.

With the current spring-fall system, seasons typically start in early April and end in early November.

How Does the Jordanian Pro League Function?

The Jordan Premier League has 12 professional football clubs that compete in a double round-robin system every season. This means that each team plays against every other team twice, once home and once away. Furthermore, it means that each team gets to play 22 games every season.

Teams are ranked with the typical point system where three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. If some teams are equal in the rankings, the team with a better goal difference is above, and if that is equal, then the number of goals scored is counted.

Once all games are finished in the season, the team with the most points becomes the winner.

Interestingly, if there’s a tie for the champion title, qualification spot, or relegation spots, the teams have to compete in a play-off match on neutral ground to decide the winner, but as always, this is quite rare.

Furthermore, the champion for the season automatically qualifies for the group stage of the most prestigious Asian football league — the AFC Champions League. The runner-up qualifies for the group stage of the AFC Cup. Jordanian teams haven’t had much success in the AFC Champions League, but they have had more success in the AFC Cup with three titles, which is second only to Kuwait.

Going down the table, the two lowest-ranked teams get relegated to the League Division 1, while the top two teams from that league get to join the Pro League for the next season.

Top Teams in the Jordanian Pro League

The most successful team, by far, is Al-Faisaly, from the capital Amman, with 34 titles. The last three titles were won in 2011-12, 2016-17, and 2018-19.

The second most-successful club is Al-Wehdat, also from Amman, with two times fewer champion titles — 17. The last season they won was 2020.

Then comes Al Ahli with eight titles, but the last one they’ve won was in 1979, so they are no longer one of the top teams in the country.

Only five more teams have won at least a single title, but only Al-Ramtha is worth mentioning as they are the 2021 winners, their third title in history.

Interestingly, they are the only team outside of the capital that has managed to win the Jordan Premier League.

Al-Faisaly and Al-Wehdat are also notable for having won both the Premier League and the Jordan FA Cup in the same season. Al-Faisaly has done it 11 times, last in 2018-19, while Al-Wehdat achieved this notable feat five times, the last time being the 2013-14 season.

Al-Faisaly and Al-Wehdat are also the typical favorites for winning the Jordan Premier League, so consider placing some future bets on them.

Top Players in the Jordan Premier League

The Jordan Pro League is notable for having many fantastic foreign players, and lately, the top scorers are often from outside of the country.

In 2021, the top scorer was Ronald Ngah, a Cameroonian football star playing for Al-Salt. He scored 15 goals, while the second-ranked was a Jordanian player Yazan Al-Naimat (Sahab), with 13 goals.

In 2020, Abdou Aziz N’Diaye from Senegal was the top scorer with a whopping 17 goals while playing for the notable Al-Wehdat. Then comes Mohamed Al-Aksh with ten goals.

Best Bets to Place on the Jordan Pro League

As we’ve mentioned, you should always consider Al-Faisaly and Al-Wehdat if you want to place a winner bet for the whole season.

As for actual matches, they are not always the favorites, and the situation is a bit harder to predict. There’s not even a clear home-away win distinction. For instance, in 2021, 38% of games were home wins compared to 33% away wins, while in 2020, only 29% were home wins compared to 40% away wins.

However, bear in mind that the average number of goals scored per match is typically around 2.5, so consider placing some under 2.5 bets or over 1.5.

Most other things, including scores, are highly unpredictable, so you’ll have to look at detailed predictions for each match separately if you want to place other potentially lucrative wagers.
