As the new football season starts, let’s take a look at the best Ghanaian players that return to the pitch for their European clubs.

Ghana has a rich footballing history, producing some exceptional talents who have made a mark in the European football scene. As of 2023, several Ghanaian players have established themselves as key contributors to their respective clubs.

In this article, we will explore the top five Ghanaian footballers who are making waves in Europe.

5- Jeffrey Schlupp

Schlupp remained a key player in Southampton’s midfield as they finished 11th in the Premier League last season. Under Patrick Vieira and Paddy McCarthy, he made a total of 36 appearances across all competitions for Palace.

Newly-appointed manager Roy Hodgson has targeted a top-four finish for the 2023-24 campaign, with Schlupp expected to continue as a starter in Southampton’s midfield line.

4- Tariq Lamptey

Last season, Lamptey secured more playing time at Brighton as they spent a fantastic campaign under Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi.

The new season comes with great opportunities for the Ghanaian right-back as Brighton play in Europa League. Let’s see if his performances will convince De Zerbi to start him ahead of Pervis Estupiñán in Brighton’s backline.

3- Mohammed Salisu

Salisu made 22 Premier League appearances for Southampton as they suffered relegation last season. His performances attracted interest from a number of clubs who hoped to prize him away from the Championship club.

Monaco eventually won the race, signing the Ghanaian star for around  €15m. The former Valladolid star will play in a different league next season, hoping to emulate his successful spells in Spain and England.

2- Mohammed Kudus

Kudus spent a wonderful 2022-23 season at Ajax, establishing a reputation as one of the most exciting talents in European football.

The Ghanaian midfielder made 30 appearances in Eredivisie, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists. His performances have attracted interest from both Chelsea and Arsenal. But, by the time of writing this article, Ajax is yet to reach an agreement to sell the 23-year-old ahead of the new campaign.

1- Thomas Partey

Partey is currently the best Ghanaian player in Europe, continuing his crucial role in Arsenal’s midfield line. Last season, he made 33 Premier League appearances for the Gunners as they lost a close title race against Manchester City.

The Gunners have gone on to sign the likes of Kai Havertz and Declan Rice, increasing the competition in midfield. However, Partey will most likely keep getting enough playing time as Arsenal return to the Champions League.
