Serie A hosts so many African players, but who are the best of the best?

Serie A has a long and prosperous history with African footballers. Some of the best African players of all time have started their rise to stardom in Italian teams.

The trend has not stopped in recent years, with a flow of young African stars taking the Italian top-flight by storm.

Let’s take a look at the best African footballers currently active in Serie A.

5- Felix Afena-Gyan 🇬🇭

Afena-Gyan made his senior debut under Jose Mourinho in October 2021. Since then, the Ghanaian prodigy has gradually improved his place in Roma’s squad, getting more and more minutes.

The 19-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Giallorossi this season, scoring twice. He also made his international debut for the Black Stars in March 2022.

The Roma striker might not be an established star like the other players on our list, but we will certainly hear more of him in the future.

4- Musa Barrow 🇬🇲

Barrow is one of those forwards whose effective displays could go underappreciated because of his unglamorous playing style.

Mainly playing as a left-winger, Barrow can also perform as an attacking midfielder or a centre forward. The Gambia international has made 30 appearances for Bologna this season, scoring five goals and providing six assists.

Barrow’s displays were crucial to Bologna’s escape from the relegation zone after the winter break. Let’s see if he will attract interest from other clubs next summer.

3- Victor Osimhen 🇳🇬

Despite struggling with several injury setbacks, Osimhen has managed to continue his key role in Napoli’s attacking line this season.

The Super Eagles star has made 24 appearances for the Blues, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists. He has already managed to match his last season’s record. However, most observers believe the 23-year-old is yet to activate his best form at Napoli.

Osimhen is one of the most promising young forwards in Serie A, and we expect to see more of his brilliance next season.

Kessie can easily be given a place among the top five Serie A players of this season. His performances have been vital to Milan’s rise to the top of the league table.

The Rossoneri midfielder has integrated well into Stefano Pioli’s tactics, helping the team in both attacking and defensive phases.

Milan are yet to secure the Scudetto. But even if they don’t win it, Kessie’s brilliant form shouldn’t go unnoticed.

The Ivorian star will most likely leave the Rossoneri as a free agent next summer, with several sources confirming he will join Barcelona.

1- Kalidou Koulibaly 🇸🇳

Napoli have struggled hard for consistency this season, slipping from the top of the Serie A table to the third place.

However, even when they don’t play well up front, their defensive integrity is impressive. Koulibaly is the main figure behind Napoli’s great defensive stats, helping the Blues with his versatility and physical presence.

Despite Napoli’s mostly defensive tactics, Koulibaly has also made an impact in front of the goal. In his 24 appearances for Napoli, the Senegalese centre-back has scored three goals and provided two assists.
