Let’s take a look at the most successful coaches in Chelsea’s history.

Throughout their 117-year history, Chelsea have had 28 permanent and nine short-term coaches.

Former owner Roman Abramovich was infamous for sacking coaches frequently. No gaffer survived more than three seasons under the Russian businessman.

Abramovich left Chelsea earlier this year, but the trend continued with Thomas Tuchel’s surprise dismissal at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.

Let’s check out where the German boss ranks in terms of trophies achieved at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel found a brilliant start to life in West London. The former Borussia Dortmund boss took over from Frank Lampard, who was sacked by Abramovich in January 2021.

Five months after his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel claimed the club’s second Champions League title.

The Blues went on to claim the European Super Cup and Club World Cup titles while reaching five finals under the German boss.

New Chelsea owner, Todd Boehly, spent £273m to rebuild Chelsea’s squad in the 2022 summer transfer window.
But, he went on to sack Tuchel only six games into the new season.

Despite his short spell at Chelsea, Tuchel still ranks above the likes of Antonio Conte, Rafael Benitez, and Roberto Di Matteo, who each claimed two trophies during their respective stints in charge of the Blues.

2. Gianluca Vialli (4)

Following the controversial sacking of Ruud Gullit in 1998, Chelsea appointed Vialli as player-manager for the second part of their 97-98 campaign.

The Blues were already in the semi-finals of the League Cup and the quarter-finals of the Cup Winner’s Cup when Vialli took charge.

The Italian boss led Chelsea to both trophies as well as winning the European Super Cup by beating Real Madrid.

Next season, Chelsea finished fifth in the Premier League as they struggled for consistency under Vialli. However, they still managed to win the FA Cup under their former teammate.

The club sacked Vialli after he fell out with a number of his key players, including Gianfranco Zola and Didier Deschamps.

1. Jose Mourinho (7)

Mourinho is widely considered the greatest manager in Chelsea’s history for his achievements at the club.

The Portuguese manager arrived at Chelsea on the back of his Champions League-winning stint at Porto. He went on to claim back-to-back Premier League titles, returning Chelsea to domestic glory after 50 years.

Chelsea also won two League Cups in Mourinho’s first spell, as well as the 2007 FA Cup.

Tensions with Abramovich led to Mourinho’s sacking later that year. However, the club appointed their former manager again in 2013.

Mourinho’s style had developed during his successful spell at Real Madrid, but he still managed to improve his Chelsea legacy.

The Portuguese boss led Chelsea to a domestic double in 2015, winning both the Premier League and the League Cup.

However, the club sacked him for the second time when they nearly slipped to the relegation zone in the weeks prior to Christmas.
